In praise of Shadow
That golden eye, those awning
lashes that shield the tactician stare
and sprint and sinking tooth
from the white gold sun
that is you, Shadow,
exquisite cat,
challenger of arid desert sand;
fatalist with growling stomach and aching chest;
survivor of glacier ice bladed
to slice the veins and the thickest hide
I held in my hands a miracle-of-the-many-million
years
purring with content to meet another
How many tears would etch
two dark glaciers down my face to shield me
from the white sun?
